Reuse Engineering Forum East Anglia- JMS Engineers & GC Robertson

Two of the region’s leading engineering firms, JMS Engineers and GC Robertson, have joined forces to launch the Reuse Engineering Forum East Anglia (REFEA) - a new sustainability initiative promoting innovative, environmentally responsible practices in structural and civil engineering.

REFEA aims to bring together professionals from across East Anglia, Essex, and London to share knowledge, explore practical solutions, and encourage the reuse of construction materials, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), and other low-carbon engineering approaches.

The initiative will be overseen by Mark Weston and co-led by Mathan Rengasamy from JMS Engineers, George Williams from JMS Engineers and Holly Peirson from GC Robertson, with the new website going live in August 2025.

"Sustainability in construction needs to move beyond theory into practical, measurable action," says Mark Weston. "REFEA will give engineers, architects, and developers the platform to make that happen."

Key goals of REFEA include:

  • Promoting the reuse of structural and civil engineering materials to cut waste and reduce carbon footprints.

  • Encouraging the integration of SuDS to improve water management and climate resilience.

  • Facilitating collaboration between contractors, developers, architects, and engineers for greener project delivery.

Holly Peirson adds: "By combining our expertise, we can help the industry design and build more sustainably without compromising safety, quality, or cost-effectiveness."

In the future, The Reuse Engineering Forum will host networking events, knowledge-sharing sessions, and technical resources for construction professionals who want to embed sustainability at the core of their projects.

Path to a Low-Carbon Built Environment

The built environment contributes nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, much of it through construction and materials. In East Anglia, reducing embodied carbon is critical to meeting sustainability goals. By reusing structures, designing efficiently, and integrating low-impact civil solutions, we can reshape how the region builds - and lead the way towards a net zero future.
